Formerly called 'on site' painting or 'one on one' till new coined word became popularized 'En Plein Aire'. Artist travels in van unloading portable watercolor gear; Large Plano Tackle box, large equipment tote bin, stretched & stapled wc paper sheets onto protected plywood carry boards. Paint flat on fold out tables, mesh shade tent usually needed. camera close by for later references & capture of action(to develop more complicated 2nd painting), pre-draw & compose on sketch pad, 1-3 day sittings, completion may extend to mat cutting, hand crafting custom frame, loss of 'old Florida' scenes & keen on FL flora & fauna inspires selection of subject matter. Early 'How To' watercolor books by artist O'Hare, Pike, Kautski & favorite watercolorist Winslow Homer guided my interest in plein air painting. Explosion in popularity of en plein air/paint outs has been like a rabbit race with this gopher still ambling on. Entry; an early painting accomplished by en plein air setup on country road bridge overlooking fishermen below. Occasional semi truck would passby blowing dust & dirt up. A realatively short painting session.
